For over a decade, we’ve had the privilege of documenting the evolution of Yoshiyuki Hamasaki’s 2001 Sunburst Yellow RX-7 FD3S. From its early days to its current refined form, Yoshiyuki’s RX-7 has stood as a benchmark in the Mazda community, blending timeless style, purposeful modifications, and a dedication to precision that reflects years of passion. As we revisit this legendary build once again, we celebrate not just the car’s transformation, but the journey behind it.
Previous build features:
Sunburst Yellow FD3S x Regamaster (2021)
Yellow Beef (2018)
Sunburst Yellow FD3S | Hamasaki (2016)
Hamasaki’s FD3S (2014)
Since our last feature, the FD3S has undergone five major changes that elevate its presence even further. A new set of wheels sets the tone, paired with a refined front bumper and front lip that sharpen the car’s overall look. Subtle yet effective revised muffler setup brings a more aggressive tone to match its performance. Inside, new seats complete the experience, combining comfort with a track-ready feel.
At first glance, the front bumper may look stock, but it’s far from it. Subtly smoothing the OEM number pocket and integrating a US Zenki front side marker. The setup, based on Aeroworks, features a modified front lip with revised width, thickness, and shape for a truly original finish.
The main focus of the updates lies in the wheels. RE-Amemiya AW-7 reverse mounted with a full brushed finish. Breaking from the trend, Yoshiyuki opted for 17-inch sizing over 18s, achieving a lower stance with a thicker tire for a more purposeful and classic look.
RE-Amemiya AW-7 wheel and tire specs:
Front: 17 inches 9.5j±0 235/40/17
Rear: 17 inches 10.5j±0 255/40/17
DUNLOP DIREZZA Z3 all around
The brakes were changed with Biot 334 2-piece rotors and yellow calipers up front, paired with a Biot 340 Big Rotor Kit in the rear. Careful attention was given to the brake-to-wheel clearance, striking the perfect balance between form and function.
A very subtle change is the outlet shape of the muffler.
Inside, the cabin is fitted with rare Mazdaspeed bucket seats. An iconic and sought-after upgrade that blends factory heritage with motorsport-inspired support and style.
After more than a decade of steady refinement, Yoshiyuki‘s Sunburst Yellow FD3S continues to embody the perfect balance of subtle evolution and personal expression. Each update reflects a deep understanding of the platform, proving that true style is built over time and not trends.
